Egyptians used mummification to preserve the deseased body so that the soul was capable of moving on to the afterlife. The hot sand of the desert would dry out the body and the deseased wasn't able to make their way into the afterlife. Early burials in ancient Egypt did not involve artificial mummification. Bodies placed directly in the sand often dried out naturally while those in a coffin did not, which allowed the flesh to rot away. The ancient Egyptians believed that before a person could get to the afterlife, they had to pass through the underworld. The underworld was a place that was full of terrifying monsters and dangerous animals. A person would need magic to successfully overcome these threats.
First, read the Storyabout how bodies were mummified and answer the following questions:

- Which are the two processes of mummification? Explain them briefley
- What is the afterlife?
- Why were they buried with amulets?
- Who where the Embalmers?
